Mesoblast has acquired the worldwide licence to commercialise adult stem cell technology for orthopaedic applications, including the repair of bone fractures and regeneration of cartilage for knees and for vertebral discs in the back. Mesoblast has identified this technology as having a number of significant commercial and technical advantages and is committed to its rapid development and commercialisation.
The technology, developed over more than 10 years by scientists at the Hanson Institute and the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science in South Australia, enables highly efficient isolation of mesenchymal precursor cells (MPC), a rare and potent type of adult stem cell population that can effectively generate new bone, cartilage, and blood vessels, to levels that provide up to 1000-fold purer MPC populations than can be generated using existing and competing technologies.
This technology has achieved outstanding results in clinical and preclinical trials.
Mesoblast has acquired a 39.2% stake in Angioblast Systems Inc, a US-based company commercialising the technology for cardiac, vascular, and eye conditions.
